The Drinking Game:
Three months ago (April 2013), we lost one of the greatest terrible directors of all time: Jess Franco. Franco churned out 189 films in his more than 50 year career, most of which were focused on the themes of zombies, women in prison, and lesbian vampires. At times in his life--especially at the beginning of his career--Franco created moments of true cinematic genius. Mostly, though, Franco cashed in paychecks by shooting films as fast as possible without giving a damn about pacing, dialogue or plot (unless that plot involved getting a girl naked, getting a girl killed or getting a naked girl killed).
This week, we're screening a film from when Franco was trying to capitalize on the Italian cannibal film craze of the early 80s: DEVIL HUNTER. The main character of the film is Laura Crawford (the lovely and oft-naked Ursula Buchfellner), an actress who gets kidnapped in South America and held in the jungle for ransom. In response, her producer dispatches a porn-stached Vietnam vet to rescue her. The problem, though, is that Laura has been kidnapped yet again, this time by an inexplicably multi-ethnic tribe that worships a cannibal-devil-monster-thingy which is really just a naked black guy with laughably fake red eyes (and Franco goes a little equal opportunity by constantly showing you his cock).
Although the film is terrible, we can't solely blame Franco. His DP was obviously wonk-eyed and had little knowledge of how to properly expose film, and whoever did the dubbing had must have undergone several lobotomies. Although Franco did choose the actors, he probably couldn't help that they all came from dead-eyed-monotone school of drama or that his sound designer likely did massive amounts of coke before putting in outlandish, science-fiction-y sound effects that don't make a goddamn bit of sense.
Basically, we're going to love making fun of this film. Join us this Thursday!
The Drinking Game:
- Drink whenever you see nekkidness (pace yourself!).
- Drink whenever you see in "devil vision".
- Drink whenever those goddamn drums start playing again.
